As Medium writer Ethan Siegel explains in a recent story, the red giant star Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion is due to become a supernova:

When that occurs, Siegel says,

Over a time period of approximately 10 days, the brightness of Betelgeuse will gradually rise, eventually becoming about as bright as the full Moon. Its brightness will surpass all the stars and planets after about an hour, will reach that of a half Moon in three days, and will reach its maximum brightness after approximately 10 days. To skywatchers across the globe, Betelgeuse will appear to be even brighter than the full Moon, as instead of being spread out over half a degree (like the full Moon), all of its brightness will be concentrated into a single, solitary, saturated point.

If that occurs soon, as it could, many people will surely take that as a sign from God of human significance, as surely as they believe in the story of the Christmas star or that, as the President of the United States said recently with reference to an assassination attempt, “God saved me to Make America Great Again.”

That belief will make people behave in ways that will have significant effects on human affairs. So the supernova will indeed affect human events, whether one believes in God or not.

Get ready for many people interpreting it as announcing the End of Times and behaving accordingly.
