I think it's an obsolete idea that our minds are "blank slates". Our brains, like the rest of our bodies, grow from structures originally specified in our DNA, and those structures enable us to some experiences as opposed to others. For example, we seem to have pre-wired face-detection capabilities and auditory capabilities that facilitate language learning.
