… we’d be acting as stand-ins for nature since we’d be reverse-engineering our brain with computers. If, however, we end up succeeding in producing artificial life, this would be because nature’s pantheistic power would flow through us and into this techno-organism, making our input in the process almost incidental.

I think that is what is likely to happen -- that we will develop artificial forms of life with independent sensory and cognitive capabilities -- if we humans don't destroy ourselves first.
