In evaluating music there are at least two things to consider: the composition and the performance. Poetry, at least potentially, has both aspects too: the written work and the oral reading. Sometimes the creation of the work is at least partly improvised at the time of performance, as in the case of good jazz or rap poetry.
One of my favorite poems is Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas. For full appreciation it must be read — or, better, recited — aloud.
