It’s definitely a matter of perspective, and cause and effect. Our genes affect our individual behavior, but indirectly, and our individual behavior doesn’t really affect our individual genes much at all. We have to consider the larger population. We humans are unique, at least on Earth, in our ability to act as supra-organisms, enabled by our language ability, to modify our own genes directly and to create artificial forms of “life” that don’t rely on our genetics at all. Soon our genes may no longer be in control.
