It's interesting, Allan, to review the history of time travel stories (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_travel_in_fiction). They seem to have emerged in the 19th century as the idea of "progress" in history developed in Europe and North America. The invention of the motion picture probably helped to get people to accept the idea that time is a linear phenomenon that can be rolled backward and forward.
