It's interesting that we can read numbers in positional notation aloud, but only by saying names for digits and for magnitude modifiers -- 1,200,015 is read as "one million, two hundred thousand, and fifteen". To do much of anything useful with that, mathematically, the hearer must convert what s/he hears back to written form (or a mental/visual representation).
