Most of us non-specialists assume (if we think about it at all) that digital data is precise and timeless, but this article reminds us that we ignore the physical substrate at our peril. Some of my CDs have developed errors after a decade or two.

Whether the data we store in "the cloud" will last as long as information that has been stored for centuries in printed form on paper is still an open question.
