Thank you for an excellent article. It's interesting, and also troubling, that people can co-opt and mistake one symbol for another, similar-looking one.

I had a grandmother of German descent, born in about 1885 the United States, who sewed a quilt with that same pattern in about 1905. She was very embarrassed when the Nazis later adopted it as their symbol, and she could no longer use the quilt because it might misidentify her as a Nazi sympathizer.
