The key to the power and limits of language is, prior to enabling us to make propositions, its requirement that we divide our experiences into discrete, named categories -- Male vs female, old vs new, true vs false, human vs non-human, and on and on. That allows us speed of communication at the cost of imprecision and inevitable misunderstandings and disagreements. We can debate endlessly over abstract philosophical categories like “consciousness” or “God", because we don’t all define them the same way.
