We have to acknowledge that we are social animals; we cannot survive alone. Most of us belong to many human groups, large and small, and our groups need us as much as we need them. Our mutual needs include

  • Support for our individual human needs.
  • Security and persistence, both of our own lives and the lives of our groups.
  • Ability to accomplish tasks that we cannot perform alone.

That’s it; that’s all we really need. Unfortunately, though, our individual and group needs often are contradictory or conflicting, and unresolved conflicts can lead to tragedy. Must they?
